The Change of Superman over the Years

The Man of Steel or Superman as most would know him debuted to the world in June 1938 in Action Comics #1. Superman’s powers have not always been what they are today. Not only have they evolved in strength but some have disappeared. The costume that Superman wore has been altered over time in appearance. The films of Superman have transformed. The actors have changed from film to film and this has reconditioned how the character is perceived.   Superman has diversified since his creation and this is evident in the character, the comics and films.

When Superman was first created in 1938 he was given the power to lift a car, run like a speeding bullet, leap over tall buildings, and he was almost invulnerable. The only thing that could penetrate his iron skin was government issued missiles.   As the years have passed by Superman has become more powerful with the ability to lift mountains, they have changed his ability to leap over tall buildings, and he can now fly. Kryptonite or Green-K as it is called in the present is the only thing that can hurt Superman, and his skin is now invulnerable to any sort of matter. His powers have grown, yet they have also deteriorated. Powers such as mind control over physical objects has disappeared, but has been replaced with such things as super breath, heat vision and x-ray vision.   These are the differences of how his character has changed over time.

Superman was sold to Detective comics in 1938 where his first comic was released in Action Comics. The creation of Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster turned the comic book industry from a fad to an industry.   There had always been comic books in the past but never the combination of a super human man in tights. “I fight for truth, justice and the American way!” was the slogan that captivated fans world wide.
