“Vive le Quebec libre!”(source) Quebec has always been separate and distinct from the rest of Canada. Many people even think of Quebec as being like its own nation. However, Quebec’s separation from Canada is not beneficial or desirable to most Quebecers or Canadians. Quebec will have trouble with economic sustainability, Quebec’s mere attempts at separation causes segregation and civil unrest, also there will be many social issues in a separated Quebec. In the end Quebec will not gain anything positive from a separation with Canada.
Keeping a stable economy will be one of the most difficult objectives for Quebec if it separates. The process of pulling away from Canada will have very strong negative effects on Quebec’s economy. For one, businesses will not want to stay in Quebec’s unstable economy. The same thing that occurred in the 1980’s during that separatist movement will happen again. Anglophone businesses will all leave Montreal and other Quebec cities to resettle in Toronto (web 2). Also, during this difficult time and later facing other difficulties Quebec will have to tough it alone (web 1). With Quebec being used to receiving help from Canada like the “equalization payments” (web 3), it will be difficult for them learn how to sustain themselves without this extra aid. During this time when Quebec is learning how to function as they’re own country their economy will be deteriorating. It is likely that Quebec will end up poorer than before. That is because of the loss of businesses and industry and consequently money. “On its own Quebec would be a weak, second rate nation, with only one city of economic consequence, Montreal.” (web 2)
Separation causes Canada many issues; segregation and civil unrest being main. Canada is a very ethnically diverse country; there are many people of various backgrounds and cultures. It would seem to be a segregation to let just one of these cultures separate and become their own country just to keep their traditions...
