Regional Disparity

      Soon after WW1 ended, countries started to get back on track starting from the economy but later suffered. During the 1920’s Canada went through its biggest crisis ever. Black Tuesday was the given name for the dreadful day. This day was when the stock market caused chaos for everyone and was digging a big hole year after year in Canada and worldwide.   Many workers either had a deduction in their salary or were let go. Businesses were closed because of the lack of profit they made and could not afford to keep running. The economy was in its worst state in Canadian history and also in many other countries. Soon this crisis was classified as The Great Depression. Many parts of Canada such as the prairies were hit hard as farmers were unable to sell their crops, reducing the amount of money they had to live. The Maritimes did not suffer as hard as the other provinces as the relied on their main resources such as coal, steel, and fish.

      During the 1920’s Canada’s economy started to grow as countries that had been in the war had started to buy Canadian products such as Britain and parts of Europe in the help of loans given from the United States. This helped European countries rebuild their economies to get back on track. This loan helped create the demand for Canadian products such as wheat. Wheat exports climbed from $45.5 million in 1911 to $353.1 million in 1928. Not only that but industries such as pulp, paper, mining, and hydro-electricity developed and expanded rapidly into America and into many other countries. As newsprint started to get high demand, investments in Canadian paper mills grew by 350% making Canada the world’s largest leading maker of paper. Soon many mills were built in Canadian provinces from central to eastern Canada boosting the Canadian economy. Soon new uses of nickel were found especially for auto parts. The automobile sector started to grow, increasing the production of nickel by 200% in Sudbury. This...
